Redesign The Elements of Style to increase clarity through contemporary typesetting techniques.

Collaborate with a team to enhance readability and create a unified visual style using InDesign's Character and Paragraph Styles.

RESULTS

Inspired by the idea that traffic laws and grammar books are essential guidebooks to life, I designed the booklet covers with red, yellow, and green traffic motifs, complemented by arrow motifs for visual cohesion. Our team utilized InDesign styles to ensure consistent typography and seamless text alignment across the finalized booklets.

Project Overview

The Elements of Style is a classic reference book about grammar for students and conscientious writers. The redesign sets the text in a contemporary style by increasing the clarity of the grammar rules. I worked with a team of three designers to create a single related series of redesigned booklets. This three-volume grammar rulebook was a collaboration between two other designers from my Typography II course. I was in charge of Section II, and my group and I worked together to incorporate each of our design styles into one consistent design system.

Cover Design Sketches

I began the design process by brainstorming themes and visual concepts that encapsulated the ideas behind the Elements of Style grammar book. While exploring the intersection of language and structure, I noticed a parallel between the laws of the road and the rules of grammar because both systems provide essential guidelines that help maintain order and understanding. With a clear concept in mind, I produced a series of rough sketches. My initial drafts focused on layout, typography, and visual elements.
